Xanthurus Angelfish (Apolymichthys xanthurus)

Description:

Behavior: The Xanthurus Angelfish, also known as the Yellowtail Angelfish, is a semi-aggressive species known for its striking coloration and active behavior. These fish can be quite territorial, especially towards other angelfish. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of live rock, caves, and hiding spots. Xanthurus Angelfish are known for their inquisitive nature and are often seen exploring their surroundings.

Color: The Xanthurus Angelfish is visually stunning, featuring a body that is predominantly silver to white with a pearlescent sheen. The most distinctive feature is its bright yellow tail, which contrasts beautifully with the rest of the body. The fins are often edged with black, adding to their dramatic appearance. Juveniles and adults exhibit similar color patterns, although the intensity of the colors may increase as they mature.

Diet: Xanthurus Angelfish are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. They do well on a mix of high-quality flake food, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Including marine algae or spirulina in their diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Regular feedings are important to keep them healthy and active.

Tankmates: Xanthurus Angelfish are generally semi-aggressive and can be territorial towards other angelfish. Suitable tankmates include clownfish, gobies, tangs, and other robust fish. Avoid housing them with timid fish. This fish can be kept with other angelfish of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food are not lacking to minimize aggression problems.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Xanthurus Angelfish are generally considered reef-safe with caution. While they do not typically harm corals, they may occasionally nip at soft corals and sponges. Their behavior can disturb the substrate, so careful monitoring is required when adding them to a reef aquarium.

Max Size: Xanthurus Angelfish can grow up to 8 inches (20 cm) in length. Due to their active nature and need for hiding spots, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 70 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Xanthurus Angelfish are commonly found in the Western Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.

Sexual Dimorphism: Xanthurus Angelfish do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
