Skunk Tilefish (Hoplolatilus marcosi)

Description:

Behavior: The Skunk Tilefish, also known as the Redstripe Tilefish or Pinkface Tilefish, is a peaceful and active species known for its striking coloration and burrowing behavior. These fish are generally non-aggressive and can coexist well with other peaceful tankmates. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of live rock, caves, and a sandy substrate for burrowing. Skunk Tilefish are known for their tendency to create burrows in the substrate, which they use for shelter and protection.

Color: The Skunk Tilefish is visually stunning, featuring a body that transitions from bright yellow to white with a distinctive red stripe running from the snout to the dorsal fin. The face is often highlighted with pink, giving it the common name "Pinkface Tilefish." Juveniles and adults exhibit similar color patterns, although the intensity of the colors may increase as they mature.

Diet: Skunk Tilefish are carnivores and thrive on a varied diet rich in protein. They do well on a mix of high-quality flake food, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration. Regular feedings are important to keep them healthy and active.

Tankmates: Skunk Tilefish are generally peaceful and can be housed with a variety of other non-aggressive marine species. Suitable tankmates include clownfish, gobies, tangs, and other peaceful fish. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive species that may intimidate them or compete for food. They do well in pairs or small groups, provided that there is sufficient space and food availability.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Skunk Tilefish are reef-safe and do not harm corals or invertebrates. Their peaceful nature and vibrant coloration make them a beneficial addition to reef aquariums. They often dwell near the substrate, adding dynamic movement and visual appeal to the tank.

Max Size: Skunk Tilefish can grow up to 5 inches (13 cm) in length. Due to their active nature and need for burrowing space, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 50 gallons with a deep sandy substrate to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Skunk Tilefish are commonly found in the Western Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Philippines and Indonesia.

Sexual Dimorphism: Skunk Tilefish do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
