Sixline Wrasse (Pseudocheilinus hexataenia)

Description:

Behavior: The Sixline Wrasse, also known as the Six-Striped Wrasse or Sixline Reef Wrasse, is a small and active species known for its striking coloration and inquisitive behavior. These fish can be territorial, especially towards other wrasses and smaller fish. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of live rock, caves, and hiding spots. Sixline Wrasses are known for their constant movement and active swimming patterns.

Color: The Sixline Wrasse is visually stunning, featuring a body adorned with six horizontal blue stripes that run the length of its orange to reddish-brown body. The eyes are often highlighted with bright blue, adding to their overall striking appearance. Juveniles and adults exhibit similar color patterns, although the intensity of the colors may increase as they mature.

Diet: Sixline Wrasses are carnivores and thrive on a varied diet rich in protein. They do well on a mix of high-quality flake food, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration. They are also known to pick at small invertebrates and pests, making them beneficial for pest control in reef tanks, particularly for flatworms.

Tankmates: Sixline Wrasses can be territorial towards smaller fish and other wrasses. Suitable tankmates include larger, non-aggressive species such as tangs, angelfish, and clownfish. Avoid housing them with very small or timid fish that may be intimidated or outcompeted for food. Due to their territorial nature, it is important to carefully select tankmates that can coexist with them.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Sixline Wrasses are reef-safe and do not harm corals or invertebrates. Their vibrant coloration and active swimming add dynamic movement and visual appeal to the tank. Their natural pest control abilities, particularly for flatworms, make them a valuable addition to reef environments.

Max Size: Sixline Wrasses can grow up to 3 inches (8 cm) in length. Due to their active nature and need for hiding spots, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 30 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Sixline Wrasses are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Sexual Dimorphism: Sixline Wrasses do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
