Regal Angelfish (Pygoplites diacanthus)

Description:

Behavior: The Regal Angelfish, also known as the Royal Angelfish, is a stunning and somewhat shy species known for its vibrant coloration and regal presence in the aquarium. These fish are generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of live rock, caves, and hiding spots. Regal Angelfish are known for their calm nature and are often seen gracefully swimming among the rocks.

Color: The Regal Angelfish is visually stunning, featuring a body adorned with alternating vertical stripes of yellow and blue. The dorsal fin is often edged with a bright blue, and the tail is yellow. The face has a distinctive blue outline, giving it a majestic appearance. Juveniles exhibit similar color patterns, although the intensity of the colors may increase with age.

Diet: Regal Angelfish are omnivores and thrive on a varied diet. They do well on a mix of high-quality flake food, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. Including marine algae or spirulina in their diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration. They may also graze on sponges and tunicates, which can be included in their diet for added nutrition.

Tankmates: Regal Angelfish are generally peaceful and can be housed with a variety of other non-aggressive marine species. Suitable tankmates include clownfish, gobies, tangs, and other peaceful fish. Avoid housing them with overly aggressive species that may intimidate them or compete for food. This fish can be kept with other angelfish of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food are not lacking to minimize aggression problems.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Regal Angelfish are generally considered reef-safe with caution. While they do not typically harm corals, they may occasionally nip at soft corals and sponges. Their behavior can disturb the substrate, so careful monitoring is required when adding them to a reef aquarium.

Max Size: Regal Angelfish can grow up to 10 inches (25 cm) in length. Due to their active nature and need for hiding spots, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 125 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Regal Angelfish are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, the Red Sea, and the Maldives.

Sexual Dimorphism: Regal Angelfish do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
