Naso Tang (Naso lituratus)

Description:

Behavior: The Naso Tang, also known as the Lipstick Tang, is a peaceful and active species known for its vibrant coloration and unique facial markings. These fish are generally non-aggressive and can coexist well with other peaceful tankmates. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of live rock, caves, and open swimming areas.

Color: The Naso Tang is visually striking, featuring a body that is predominantly gray with a distinctive black stripe running along the dorsal ridge and a yellow streak near the caudal peduncle. Their lips are often highlighted with bright orange, giving them the name "Lipstick Tang." Additionally, the tail is adorned with long filaments or streamers in adult males, adding to their dramatic appearance.

Diet: Naso Tangs are primarily herbivores and thrive on a diet rich in marine algae. They will graze on algae growing in the tank and should be provided with a variety of seaweed and algae-based foods. Supplementing their diet with high-quality flake food, pellets, and occasional vegetable treats like blanched spinach or zucchini can help maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Naso Tangs are generally peaceful and can be housed with a variety of other non-aggressive marine species. Suitable tankmates include other tangs, angelfish, clownfish, gobies, and wrasses. This fish can be kept with other tangs of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food are not lacking to minimize aggression problems.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Naso Tangs are reef-safe and do not harm corals or invertebrates. Their herbivorous diet helps control algae growth, making them a beneficial addition to reef aquariums.

Max Size: Naso Tangs can grow up to 18 inches (45 cm) in length. Due to their large size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 180 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Naso Tangs are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Sexual Dimorphism: Naso Tangs exhibit sexual dimorphism, with adult males developing long tail streamers and more pronounced coloration compared to females.
