Harlequin Tusk (Choerodon fasciatus)

Description:

Behavior: The Harlequin Tusk, also known as the Harlequin Tuskfish, is a stunning and active species known for its vibrant coloration and bold personality. These fish are generally semi-aggressive and can become territorial, especially towards smaller tankmates. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of rocks, caves, and open swimming areas.

Color: The Harlequin Tusk is visually striking, featuring a body adorned with alternating bands of bright blue and orange-red, with distinctive blue-green teeth that are visible even when the mouth is closed. This unique and vivid coloration makes them a standout addition to any marine aquarium. Juveniles and adults exhibit similar color patterns.

Diet: Harlequin Tusks are carnivores and thrive on a varied diet rich in protein. They do well on a mix of high-quality frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, and finely chopped seafood. They will also accept high-quality flake food and pellets. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Harlequin Tusks can be somewhat territorial and should be housed with other robust and similarly sized fish. Suitable tankmates include larger tangs, angelfish, wrasses, and groupers. Avoid housing them with very small or timid fish that may be intimidated or outcompeted for food.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Harlequin Tusks are generally not considered reef-safe, as they may pose a risk to smaller invertebrates such as shrimp and crabs. They do not typically harm corals, but their foraging behavior can disturb the substrate and potentially disrupt delicate organisms.

Max Size: Harlequin Tusks can grow up to 12 inches (30 cm) in length. Due to their size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 100 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Harlequin Tusks are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of Australia and the Great Barrier Reef.

Sexual Dimorphism: Harlequin Tusks do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
