Gem Tang (Zebrasoma gemmatum)

Description:

Behavior: The Gem Tang, also known as the Spotted Tang, is a rare and highly sought-after species known for its striking appearance and active swimming behavior. These fish are generally peaceful when young but can become territorial and aggressive as they grow larger, especially towards other tangs. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of hiding spots and open swimming areas.

Color: The Gem Tang is visually stunning, featuring a body adorned with a deep black coloration covered in small, bright white spots, giving it a "gem-like" appearance. The dorsal and anal fins are accented with a vivid yellow edge, enhancing their striking look. Juveniles and adults have similar color patterns, with the white spots becoming more prominent as the fish matures.

Diet: Gem Tangs are primarily herbivores and thrive on a diet rich in marine algae. They will graze on algae growing in the tank and should be provided with a variety of seaweed and algae-based foods. Supplementing their diet with high-quality flake food, pellets, and occasional vegetable treats like blanched spinach or zucchini can help maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Gem Tangs are generally peaceful and can be housed with a variety of other non-aggressive marine species. Suitable tankmates include other tangs, angelfish, clownfish, gobies, and wrasses. This fish can be kept with other tangs of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food are not lacking to minimize aggression problems.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Gem Tangs are reef-safe and do not harm corals or invertebrates. Their herbivorous diet helps control algae growth, making them a beneficial addition to reef aquariums.

Max Size: Gem Tangs can grow up to 9 inches (23 cm) in length. Due to their active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 125 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Gem Tangs are commonly found in the Western Indian Ocean, particularly around the waters of Madagascar, Mauritius, and Reunion Island.

Sexual Dimorphism: Gem Tangs do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
