Dragon Wrasse (Novaculichthys taeniourus)

Description:

Behavior: The Dragon Wrasse is a fascinating and active species known for its unique behavior and distinct appearance. These fish are generally semi-aggressive and can become more territorial as they grow larger. They thrive in well-structured environments with plenty of rocks and hiding spots to explore and move.

Color: The Dragon Wrasse is visually striking, featuring a body adorned with shades of green, brown, and white. Juveniles have a different color pattern compared to adults, with juveniles displaying a bright red or orange color with white spots, while adults exhibit a more muted coloration with intricate patterns. Their appearance changes significantly as they mature.

Diet: Dragon Wrasses are carnivores and thrive on a varied diet rich in protein. They do well on a mix of high-quality frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, krill, and finely chopped seafood. They will also accept high-quality flake food and pellets. Providing a varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: Dragon Wrasses can be somewhat territorial and should be housed with other robust and similarly sized fish. Suitable tankmates include larger tangs, angelfish, wrasses, and groupers. Avoid housing them with very small or timid fish that may be intimidated or outcompeted for food.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Dragon Wrasses are generally not considered reef-safe, as they may pose a risk to smaller invertebrates such as shrimp and crabs. They have a habit of moving rocks and substrate, which can disturb corals and other delicate organisms.

Max Size: Dragon Wrasses can grow up to 12 inches (30 cm) in length. Due to their size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 100 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Dragon Wrasses are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the waters of the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

Sexual Dimorphism: Dragon Wrasses do not exhibit significant sexual dimorphism, making it difficult to distinguish males from females based solely on appearance.
