Clown Tang (Acanthurus lineatus)

Description:

Behavior: The Clown Tang, also known as the Lined Surgeonfish or Lined Tang, is a strikingly beautiful and active species. They are known for their vibrant colors and energetic swimming patterns. Clown Tangs can be territorial and somewhat aggressive, especially towards other tangs or similar species, so it’s essential to provide them with plenty of space and hiding spots. This fish is best suited for larger aquariums with ample room for swimming and territorial behavior.

Color: The Clown Tang is known for its bright and eye-catching coloration. The body is a vibrant blue with bold yellow horizontal stripes running from the head to the tail. These striking colors, combined with their unique body shape, make them a standout addition to any marine aquarium.

Diet: Clown Tangs are primarily herbivores and thrive on a diet rich in algae. They will graze on marine algae, seaweed, and high-quality herbivore pellets. Supplement their diet with nori (seaweed sheets) and a variety of fresh or frozen greens to ensure they receive all the necessary nutrients.

Tankmates: Clown Tangs can be kept with other fish, but care should be taken when choosing tankmates. This species can be territorial and aggressive towards other tangs or fish with similar body shapes. It’s generally best to keep Clown Tangs with robust and non-aggressive fish. This fish can be kept with other tangs if introduced all at once to an appropriately sized aquarium of 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food are not lacking to minimize aggression problems.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Clown Tangs are generally reef-safe and do not harm corals or invertebrates. Their grazing habits can help manage algae growth, making them a beneficial addition to reef tanks. However, they may occasionally nip at small invertebrates, so monitor their behavior in a reef setting.

Max Size: Clown Tangs can grow up to 10 inches (25 cm) in length. Due to their size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 125 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality. Larger tanks are recommended for long-term health and well-being.

Origin: Clown Tangs are found in the Indo-Pacific region, including the waters of the Central and Western Pacific Oceans, such as around Fiji, Tonga, and the Great Barrier Reef.

Sexual Dimorphism: There is no distinct sexual dimorphism in Clown Tangs; males and females look similar in terms of coloration and size.
