Blonde Naso Tang (Naso elegans)

Description:

Behavior: The Blonde Naso Tang, also known as the Elegant Tang or Blonde Naso Surgeonfish, is a peaceful and active species known for its graceful swimming and gentle demeanor. These fish are generally peaceful but can become territorial towards other tangs, especially in smaller tanks. They thrive in spacious aquariums with plenty of swimming room.

Color: The Blonde Naso Tang is a visually stunning fish with a light gray to yellowish body. It features striking black and orange markings on its face and a vivid yellow dorsal fin. The tail fin of adult males is adorned with lyre-shaped filaments, commonly referred to as "streamers," that add to their elegant appearance. The distinctive blonde coloration on the dorsal fin is what gives this fish its common name.

Diet: Blonde Naso Tangs are herbivores with a strong preference for marine algae. In captivity, they should be provided with a diet rich in algae-based foods, such as nori and spirulina. Supplementing their diet with high-quality flake food, pellets, and occasional meaty treats like brine shrimp and mysis shrimp can help maintain their health and vibrant coloration.

Tankmates: While Blonde Naso Tangs can be somewhat territorial once the grow up, they are generally compatible with a variety of other marine fish, including peaceful species and larger, non-aggressive fish. Suitable tankmates include angelfish, wrasses, and clownfish. This fish can be kept with other tangs of the same genus. It is advisable to introduce them all at the same time to an appropriately sized aquarium, usually 5 feet or longer. Ensure that algae and other food is not lacking to minimize aggression problems.

Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Blonde Naso Tangs are reef-safe and do not harm corals or invertebrates. Their herbivorous diet helps control algae growth, making them a beneficial addition to reef aquariums.

Max Size: Blonde Naso Tangs can grow up to 18 inches (45 cm) in length. Due to their size and active nature, they require a spacious aquarium of at least 180 gallons to thrive and maintain good water quality.

Origin: Blonde Naso Tangs are commonly found in the Indo-Pacific region, including the waters around the Red Sea and East Africa.

Sexual Dimorphism: Adult male Blonde Naso Tangs develop distinctive streamers on their tail fin, which add to their striking appearance. This feature helps distinguish males from females, especially during the adult stage.
